The Origin, Changes and Compositive Principles of Palmulgunja-tang

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives: This paper investigates the origin, the progressive changes and the constructive principles of Palmulgunja-tang (ø¢ÚªÏÖí÷·).
Methods: Palmulgunja-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª õ®ÜâÏé)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª Ë£çíÜâ)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ãôõäÜâ)" and "Dongmuyugo (ÔÔÙëë¶ÍÃ)".
Results and Conclusions : 1) The Palmulgunja-tang most likely originates from Paljin-tang introduced in "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª õ®ÜâÏé)". Paljin-tang progressively transformed into Seungyangpalmul-tang ("Donguisusebowon Gabobon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª Ë£çíÜâ)") and ultimately into Palmulgunja-tang ("Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ãôõäÜâ)"), a prescription appropriate for usage in the Ulgwang symptomatology (ê¦ÎÊñû). Also, Seungyangikgi-tang in "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (ÔÔì¢áøá¦ÜÁêª ãôõäÜâ)" can be presumed to have been affected by Seungyangpalmul-tang. 2) The variational prescriptions (ܨ۰) of Palmulgunja-tang shows increasing Seungyang (ã®åÕ) effect in order of Baekhaogunja-tang, Sipjeondaebo-tang, Palmulgunja-tang, and Doksampalmul-tang. 3) Palmulgunja-tang is composed of 8 herbs. Of these, Paeoniae Radix Alba (ÛÜíËå·), Glycyrrhizae Radix(Êöõ®), Angelicae gigantis Radix (Ó×Ïý), and Cnidii Rhizoma (ô¹Ïä) fortify the Soeumin Spleen Element (Þ¡êª). Ginseng Radix (ìÑ߸) and Astragali Radix (üÜ?) support the ascension of Yang, whereas Atractlodis Rhizoma White (ÛÜõô) and Citrus unshiu (òçù«) encourage the descension of Yin.
